Old Dominion RC&D Council Hold
Water Quality Presentations |

Dave Roberts, RC&D Coordinator for Old Dominion RC&D
Council gives a water quality presentation to 8
teachers during a teacher in-service day at the Lunenburg
High School.
The presentation included using a water testing kit to test
water for Dissolved Oxygen, Biological Oxygen Demand, pH,
Phosphate, Nitrate, Coliform, and Turbidity. The purpose of
the presentation was to explain to the teachers how they can
incorporate water quality and watersheds into their
curriculum.
At Nottoway High School, a presentation was given to the
Envirothon Team, which included 7 students and 2 teachers.
All of the students participated in running water quality
tests similar to those explained in the Lunenburg
presentation. The presentations took place on January
16, 2009 and January 21, 2009.
The water testing kits were provided with funding from the
Albemarle-Chowan Watershed Roundtable and Virginia
Department of Conservation and Recreation. |

South Hampton Roads RC&D Council Holds
Watershed Awareness Workshop |

|
South Hampton Roads RC&D Council held a Watershed Awareness
Workshop on November 18, 2008 in Suffolk, VA. This workshop
was made possible due to grants funds the
Albemarle-Chowan Watershed Roundtable received from Virginia
Department of Conservation & Recreation. Over 55
participants attended the workshop at the Tidewater
Agricultural Research & Extension Center. Workshop
attendees were given an overview of watershed awareness, land
preservation, tax credits, and conservation
easements/programs. A testimonial was also given by a farmer
who has utilized cost share programs to make improvements to
his farm operation. Presenters that participated in the
workshop were the City of Virginia Beach, Virginia Outdoors
Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Natural Resource Conservation
Service, and Virginia Cooperative Extension. |

Albemarle - Chowan Watershed & Rivers
Day |

| The
Albemarle-Chowan Watershed & Rivers Day event was held
on April 19, 2008. The
event was an awareness day program to focus on educating
the public about watershed awareness. Over 100 participants participated in the
event including 50 youth. The City of Franklin Department
of Recreation sponsored a youth fishing tournament. Twelve
exhibitors from local, state and federal agencies, nonprofit
organizations, local governments and industry participated
in the event as well. |
